Treatment for Scoliosis

Scoliosis can begin to develop around the age of 10 and occurs more often in girls than boys. It is defined as a curvature of the spine that occurs during growth. Scoliosis can be Flexible or also called Functional, meaning that the curve can change depending on the posture or position of the person and is caused by an imbalance of muscle strength and tightness, which is sometimes associated with orthopedic conditions. A second form of Scoliosis is fixed which is a structural issue that does not change based on a person’s position. A flexible scoliosis is easily treated with the following measures guided by a trained physical therapist:

1) Stretching soft tissue structures through passive and active stretching.
2) Myofascial Release techniques and positional strategies.
3) Active strengthening exercises.
4) Functional activity.
