Ultrasound: Is the use of high frequency sound waves between 1-3.3MHz that penetrate deep beneath the skin. There is a thermal effect that is absorbed by the muscle, ligaments, tendons and fascia resulting in the release of these soft tissues to relieve pain and promote healing. Ultrasound use also causes vibrations in the soft tissues stimulating circulation at the cellular level promoting healing.
Electrical Stimulation: There are different types of electrical stimulation. TENS functions to block pain signals reaching the brain and increases the level of endorphins in the body. NMES Neuromuscular stimulation is a stronger stimulation to strengthen muscles in cases of weakness. Strong contraction and relaxation strengthen the muscle, improves local circulation, and reduces edema or inflammation. ITF Interferential Stimulation is used in cases of chronic pain. HVGS High Voltage Galvanic Stimulation is used to reduce pain and inflammation and promote wound healing.
Biofeedback: Is a technique where the patient receives information about body signals in order to learn how to control them. Biofeedback is used in Clinica RED to receive information from the pelvic floor muscles to learn to strengthen them in cases of incontinence, organ prolapse or pain.
Hot / Cold Packs: Hot packs help to warm and relax muscle and other soft tissues of the body to prepare them before massage, stretching or exercise. The warmth brings blood to the area promoting healing effects. Heat is not recommended in acute cases of pain.
Cold packs are best used for damage from blows, bruises, and acute injuries to decrease inflammation and control pain. Cold is used during the first 48 hours in inflammatory conditions.
Paraffin: Is a mix of wax and purified oils. It is heated and used usually for the hands and feet for conditions of arthritis or joint immobility. Its affects are profound heat to relax the soft tissue in the area. This facilitates mobilization, stretching and active exercise. It is also used for muscle spasms and orthopedic conditions. Other benefits include leaving the skin lubricated and rejuvenated.
